Magnesium Stops Heart Disease

Every 40 seconds. That’s how often someone dies from heart disease — the nation’s No. 1 killer — which claims the lives of nearly 600,000 Americans every year.

But what if you could greatly lower your risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke simply by taking a single over-the-counter pill every day? Dennis Goodman, M.D., one of the nation’s top cardiologists, says that idea, in essence, is the promise offered by magnesium — a common mineral clinically shown to boost heart health.

In his new book, “Magnificent Magnesium,” Dr. Goodman documents the strong link between cardiovascular disease and magnesium deficiency — and explains how the mineral help combat the nation’s epidemic of heart problems.

“What I truly believe is that low magnesium is one of those very very important risk factors and unfortunately there’s not enough attention paid to that,” he tells Newsmax Health. “And I think there are so many people out there who have this risk factor and they’re not aware of it and it contributes to the high incidence of heart disease.”

Dr. Goodman — a clinical associate professor at the Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology at New York University and director of integrative medicine at New York Medical Associates — notes most Americans are aware of the heart-healthy benefits of aspirin, exercise, a nutritious diet, and stress management. But few understand the benefits of magnesium, despite the “tens of thousands of articles written” that have documented the connection between cardiovascular disease and low levels of the mineral in the blood.

“It’s very hard to understand why so many people don’t know about it. But what we do know [is] the people with the lowest levels of magnesium have increased risk for cardiovascular disease and all sorts of other things, too,” he says.

A 2011 study published in the America Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2011, for instance, found a 40 percent greater risk of sudden cardiac death among women with low levels of magnesium, compared to those with the highest concentrations. The study involved 88,000 nurses whose health histories were tracked for 26 years.

“For me that’s very very very impressive,” Dr. Goodman says of the study’s findings. “And it makes you realize that magnesium … is extremely important for cardiovascular health.”

He believes magnesium does not garner as much media attention — or advertising — as blockbuster heart pills and cholesterol-lowering statins because the pharmaceutical companies don’t have a financial stake in promoting its use.

“It’s not a prescription drug, it’s not something [where] the doctor writes a script,” he notes. “And therefore there’s no big drug company … going to go out and educate the public [about magnesium] In fact most people are not hearing about it. … and I think it’s a shame.”

That lack of public awareness may be why federal studies show as many as three out of four Americans are magnesium deficient, in part because they don’t eat Mediterranean-style diets high in foods that contain the mineral — such as green leafy vegetables, avocado, halibut, tuna, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and almonds.

“How many people are eating that stuff? Most people [are] not,” he observes. “So that’s one problem, you’ve got people not eating that kind of Mediterranean diet. And No. 2: The soil is deficient in magnesium. So even if you are eating that [kind of diet] you are not getting good magnesium in these vegetables so most people are deficient. And I think one of the problems is that people don’t know.”

Dr. Goodman’s own practice has confirmed, through blood testing, that about 75 percent of his patients are magnesium deficient and report such common symptoms as fatigue, muscle aches, cramps, palpitations, headaches, and gastrointestinal problems (such as constipation).

“Most people put it down to all sorts of other things… but in fact magnesium deficiency causes a lot of these symptoms,” he says.

He adds that patients who follow his recommendation to boost their levels of the mineral — through diet and supplements — “feel better within weeks.”

Dr. Goodman argues that magnesium deficiency should be treated as aggressively as other well-accepted cardiovascular risk factors — such as high blood pressure, high LDL “bad” cholesterol, low HDL “good” cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, obesity, and stress.

“One of the big things we know today is that inflammation is a major cause of serious diseases like heart attack and stroke. We’ve shown that low magnesium causes increased inflammation,” he notes.

Taking steps to understand and address your heart-disease risks is critically important, even if you do not have any symptoms of cardiovascular problem, he adds, pointing out that studies show about half of the people who die from a heart attack die without warning.

“In fact, [for] half the people who die of a heart attack, it’s their first and last symptom, and that’s very scary,” he notes. “You need to look at what are your risk factors, what are the things that put you at risk?”

Are you exercising TOO much ?

Is there a limit to the benefits of exercise?

Two studies suggest that, for certain people, keeping to a moderate physical activity regimen may be best for heart health.

One study found that a schedule of intense workouts actually boosted the risk of death from heart attack or stroke in older people with pre-existing heart disease, while the other found that young men who did a lot of endurance exercise were at higher risk for heart rhythm problems later in life.

However, one expert unconnected to the studies stressed that, on the whole, exercise is good medicine.

“Folks with heart disease should continue to engage in some form of daily physical activity,” urged Barbara George, director of The Center for Cardiovascular Lifestyle Medicine at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, N.Y. But she said moderation is key.

“You shouldn’t feel you have to become a marathon runner to reap the benefits,” George said.

The first study was led by Dr. Ute Mons of the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, Germany, and included more than 1,000 people. Most of the participants were in their 60s, had stable heart disease and were tracked for 10 years. About 40 percent exercised two to four times a week, 30 percent worked out more often, and 30 percent exercised less often.

Compared to those who got regular exercise, the most inactive people were about twice as likely to have a heart attack or stroke, and were about four times more likely to die of heart disease and all causes, the researchers said.

However, Mons’ team also found that those who did the most strenuous daily exercise were more than twice as likely to die of a heart attack compared to those who exercised more moderately.

The second study was led by Dr. Nikola Drca of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and included more than 44,000 Swedish men, aged 45 to 79. All of the men were asked about their physical activity levels at ages 15, 30, 50 and during the previous year. Their heart health was then tracked for an average of 12 years.

Those who had done intensive exercise for more than five hours a week when they were younger were 19 percent more likely to have developed a heart rhythm disorder called atrial fibrillation by age 60 than those who exercised for less than an hour a week.

That risk increased to 49 percent among those who did more than five hours of exercise at age 30 but did less than an hour a week by the time they were 60. Participants who cycled or walked briskly for an hour or more a day at age 60 were 13 percent less likely to develop atrial fibrillation.

The studies were published online May 14 in the journal Heart.

Another expert said the findings shouldn’t alter standard recommendations.

“It is not standard practice to recommend strenuous activity to individuals with coronary heart disease,” said Dr. Nieca Goldberg, director of the Tisch Center for Women’s Health at NYU Langone Medical Center, New York City. “This study, although interesting, does not change current recommendations for moderate physical activity in coronary patients.”

For her part, George said it’s clear that a moderate exercise program can provide real benefit for everyone.

“A large body of scientific research has consistently shown that a sedentary lifestyle is one of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease, and that becoming more physically active can decrease your risk by as much as 50 percent,” she said.

Current American Heart Association guidelines advise 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise most days a week or 20 minutes of vigorous activity three days a week, George added.

And in a journal editorial, a team led by Dr. Lluis Mont of the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, Spain, agreed with the two U.S. experts.

“The benefits of exercise are definitely not to be questioned; on the contrary, they should be reinforced,” the team wrote. But studies like the two published in Heart are fine-tuning recommendations for exercise, to “maximize benefits obtained by regular exercise while preventing undesirable effects — just like all other drugs and therapies,” the editorialists said.

Do Electric Cars Cause Cancer?

Electric cars have become more common on America’s highways, and along with their rise in popularity came an increase in concerns that the cars, which emit electromagnetic fields (EMFs), could increase the risk of several health hazards, including cancer.

EMFs are produced by the flow of electrical current to the motor which moves the car. Numerous studies have linked EMFs with serious health problems, including cancer, and owners of electric cars have reported memory lapses and other problems. But is the fear of electric cars justified?

“I don’t see enough data on the electric car EMF to be concerned,” former neurosurgeon and wellness expert Dr. Russell Blaylock, tells Newsmax Health.

He points to a Scandinavian study that found the EMFs emitted by electric cars were well below levels considered harmful. The study, which was conducted by The Foundation for Scientific and Industrial Research (SINTEF), included seven counties and found the magnetic fields produced by electric cars don’t pose a danger to either drivers or passengers.

“There is absolutely no cause for concern,” said Kari Schjølberg-Henriksen, a physicist at SINTEF.

Although electric and hybrid cars appear to be safe, other sources of EMFs are a real concern, says Dr. Blaylock.

“Some frequencies are more harmful than others,” he says. “Of more concern are cellphones and especially cellphone towers. People can refuse to use cellphones or use them carefully, but there is no way to escape the towers.”

Wi-Fi also increases exposure to harmful EMFs. “Some cities are now making Wi-Fi that blankets the entire city, which means exposure to known dangerous EMF fields 24/7 for a lifetime,” says Dr. Blaylock. “Also, many of these towers are now being placed in businesses, unknown to those working in these facilities — even churches are renting out their steeples. Of great concern are the huge towers near schools,” he says.

People working in the businesses or attending church would be at risk, says Dr. Blaylock, especially those already suffering from leukemia, lymphomas, and brain tumors. “They would be at very high risk because of their impaired immunity and DNA repair ability,” he said. “This is also true of people with organ transplants and those having hereditary immune defects and DNA repair defects.

“People living near power substations and high tension lines are at a danger of neurological damage, cancer, and cardiac rhythm problems,” he said.

Of course, cellphones themselves have come under fire for increasing cancer risk. A study by the Israeli Weitzmann Institute of Science found cell phones increased the risk of tumors in the salivary glands by 50 percent. The risk was even higher if the caller always used the same ear, didn’t use a hands-free gadget, or used the phone while in a rural area where reception was poor. The researchers found that a call lasting just 10 minutes can trigger changes in brain cells that are associated with cancer.

In 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer reviewed dozens of cell phone studies and issued a statement warning that cell phones may cause cancer in humans. They based their statement on findings that using a cell phone for 10 years doubles the risk of developing a form of cancerous brain tumor called a glioma, the same type that killed Ted Kennedy. In addition, a French study released this week found that heavy cell phone use increased the risk of glioma and other types of brain tumors.

The bottom line? Even though you may be bombarded by EMFs from your cellphone, cell towers, and Wi-Fi, there’s little evidence that an electric car will increase your risk for cancer.

Why you should buy a home in 2014

If you’re renting your Texas residence, you know that your home is not your own. Your rental agreement specified certain things you may not do.

For instance, you can’t paint the living room or put a nail in the wall to hang a picture. You also can’t hang a utility cabinet over the washer to hold your cleaning supplies. And why would you want to? You’d be foolish to spend money making the house nicer or more convenient, because it isn’t yours.

You can’t let your out-of-work brother move in for a few months because your lease specifies how many people will be living in the house or apartment. If you own a boat or a motorhome, you may have to pay to garage it somewhere else.

You probably can’t hang a basketball hoop or set up a trampoline or an above-ground pool. Don’t even think about wanting to build a fence.

You may or may not be permitted to own a dog or a cat – or to plant a garden in the back yard. And if you’re living in a multi-family unit, you probably have to agree to observe “quiet hours” after a certain time in the evening.

At the same time, your neighbors may not observe those rules, so you may be subjected to loud music, family fights, or children running back and forth over your head.

To make matters worse, as a tenant you have to live with insecurity. You may have a lease that says you have a right to stay for a year or even longer. But what if your landlord is behind on the payments? If “your” home is suddenly in repossession, what then?

And when your lease is up you not only have to worry about a rent increase, you have to wonder whether you’ll be permitted to stay. What if the landlord’s children need a place? Or what if he or she has sold the property and the new owner wants you out? You have no guarantee that you’ll still be living there a year when your lease is up.

The fact is, when your home isn’t really yours, you live with:

·        Other people’s rules

·        Insecurity.

When you own a home, you can put down roots…

When you own your home you’ll make improvements that reflect your personality and your lifestyle. As years go by you can remodel rooms to suit your own tastes. Space and zoning regulations permitting, you can even build an addition to accommodate a growing family or to provide space for an office or a hobby room.

You’ll have the option to plant a tree and watch it grow. You can build a fence and watch your children and your pets playing and growing alongside that tree. You’ll get to know the neighbors and the neighborhood – and you’ll truly belong somewhere.

The home will become truly yours, especially as you build memories within its walls.

2014 is a great time to become a Texas homeowner – for both financial and personal reasons. And… you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that you can live in a home that’s as nice or even nicer than your rental – for a smaller monthly outlay.

Check UNDER the Sink….Danger Might Be Lurking There!

Did you know that your sink bottoms are one of the worst areas in a home inspection? Rotted out boards under your bathroom or kitchen sinks can make water damage in those areas not only dangerous, but smelly.

Most homeowners use their sinks as much as twenty times a day, and any small leak can make the boards rotten before you might even notice it. You might also tip over a bottle of bathroom or kitchen cleaner and make the problem even worse if it contain lye or ammonia or bleach.

So at least every months, check those cabinets that have a drain pipe under them. Turn on the water and check for leaks….sometimes just tightening the connection under the hose is enough to fix it. But, you might need to replace it, too.

We have the best, but we still check it every month. I found water once in one of the bathrooms under the sink and that was enough for me to check out what to do.

And, you never want water or chemicals sitting on the floor of those cabinets to seep into the floor below.

Check it this week! And, then every month. Make sure that all the containers of liquid you have stored under there are well sealed and upright, too.

The Art of Cold Calling

Being in sales requires ongoing customer and client communication. The biggest fear most salespeople have is being rejected, by the caller on the other end of the telephone. Cold calling is not easy; in fact, it can be frightening. Same as writing blogs about cold calling.

There are some proven cold calling techniques that really work and they can help you to succeed in overcoming your fear. The first line of business is to set up an effective script. Words sell and people will listen, if what you are saying make sense to them. Even in cold calling you must grab the attention of the caller within a few seconds, otherwise you will lose them.

When you are speaking on the phone, use a calm and soothing voice. This lets the customers know that you are relaxed and they too will hear this in your voice. Keep your voice high and upbeat. Do not use a lot of unnecessary words when you are trying to make a sell. Using too many words without making a valid point will end the conversation quickly.

Talk to the decision maker to prevent repeating yourself and to save time. Find out the best times to call prospective customers and follow up on the times and dates they suggest. Let your voice be confident and relaxed and avoid repetitious words. Be an active listener and not a pretender.

Cold calling is an inexpensive direct approach – cold calling can be an effective and powerful sales tool if it is implemented in the right manner. How well cold calling techniques works depends on how well the salesperson has been trained, and how well the script has been revised. A poorly written sales pitch will drive prospective customers away; however, a well written script will definitely get their attention.

Even if you are already using cold calling in your line of work, you can always improve your techniques. Millions of businesses realize how important telephone etiquette and effective speaking is, especially on the telephone. Customers like talking to someone who is confident in themselves and in what they are selling.

11 Reasons why you should move to Texas

By now you’ve probably heard that more people are moving to Texas than to any other state. All anybody wants to talk about is how Texas has it all and you should jump on the bandwagon.

Maybe you should. Maybe you shouldn’t. Here are a dozen reasons why you should think twice before making the move:

1. Texas has jobs. Texas ranked #1 in job growth for the 12 months ending in January – with the addition of 322,400 jobs – and the trend is continuing. In January alone, Texas added 33,900 jobs. That’s more than any other state.

So – if you’d rather have an excuse to remain unemployed, don’t move to Texas. It’s too easy to find a job.

2. Texas has no state income tax. That means you have to keep more of your money, and be responsible for how it’s spent. It also means there are fewer government employees, so if you’re the civil service type, Texas isn’t your best choice.

3. The economy is doing very well. If you prefer driving past boarded up store fronts and grousing with friends about how bad things are, your opportunities in Texas will be severely limited. People are just too darned positive around here.

4. Texas is business-friendly. According to the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council’s “Business Tax Index 2013,” Texas ranks #1 in terms of the lowest costs of taxation on entrepreneurship and small business.

If you believe businesses make too much money and should be taxed heavily in order to “share the wealth,” Texas is not the place for you.

5. Texas is filled with open spaces and clean air. If you like being able to drive across your state without ever leaving the exhaust fumes of a busy street, and with plenty of time to text and make phone calls while you wait in traffic, this isn’t for you.

6. We go fast! Many of the roads in Texas are privately funded by Texas Toll road companies. Some of them can now be traveled at 80 miles per hour! If you’d rather poke along, and if you dislike private enterprise, you won’t enjoy this.

7. And then there’s the sunshine. Depending upon where you settle in Texas, you could be looking at as many as 300 days of sunshine every year. And without the smog to block it, you just might get too many of those dreaded UVA rays.

8. With too much sunshine comes lack of snow. While it does occasionally snow in Texas, if you thrive on spending October through March shoveling snow from your roof and driveways, and enjoy carrying tow chains to help your neighbors get out of snowdrifts, you’ll hate Texas.

9. Oil, oil, and more oil! If you believe we should import all of our oil from countries that hate us, you won’t approve of Texas one little bit.

10. Guns. If you believe guns should be confiscated and held only by government employees – or if you’re a robber intent on easy prey – stay out of Texas. We Texans love our guns and our laws reflect that fact. We have castle doctrine and stand-your-ground laws which allow us to use deadly force against anyone forcibly and unlawfully entering or attempting to enter our homes. We’re also allowed to defend ourselves and our families.

11. Cows, horses, and cowboys. Yep, we’ve got ‘em. If you don’t like “westerns” choose a different state.
